SAE tackles software capability…

March 29th, 2010

SAE International recently launched its SAE J2746 Software Assessment Repository in an effort to improve automotive software development capabilities and promote more effective software process improvement activities and assessments. We recently ran a press release about Peter Abowd’s contribution to the program.

For more information, check out this SAE video of our own Peter Abowd discussing the J2746 Software Assessment Repository at the 2009 SAE World Congress (April 20, 2009).

“Any idiot can write code…”

March 22nd, 2010

Here is an interesting article from Jack Ganssle at Embedded.com — Getting disciplined about embedded software development: Part 1 – Any idiot can write code.”

The article includes a discussion of the Software Engineering Institute’s Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) and CIMM, the Capability Integration Immaturity Model, a proposed answer to the CMMI from Captain Tom Schorsch of the US Air Force. About the CIMM, Ganssle remarks, “If you’ve been in this business for a while, this extension to the CMMI may be a little too accurate to be funny.”

Model-based Development in Military/Aerospace Applications

Interesting article about Simulink and model-based development.  It touches on many of the same facets we’re all familiar with – enabling collaboration, re-using models throughout development, 4-to-1 time reduction – but focuses on the applicability in mil-aero projects.

One particularly well-worded excerpt reads: “model based design enables engineers to ‘virtually’ see the end from the beginning – and eliminate those costly late-game redesigns.
