No End in Sight for the Set Top Box

March 30th, 2011

From the 2011 IP&TV World Forum in London. Ian Smedley is Altia’s European Product Manager.

STBs including the Vudu box, leftAfter browsing the aisles of this year’s IP&TV World Forum in London, I have synthesized some impressions and thoughts on the mid-term outlook on this market and Altia’s role therein. After a couple days at the show it’s obvious that our product is just as relevant and effective as ever.

According to the Broadband Forum, Internet Protocol television (IPTV) subscribers reached 45 million towards the end of 2010. Last year has since been declared a ‘banner year’ for the IPTV industry. These subscribers benefit from features such as Interactive TV, catch-up TV (like Hulu), video-on-demand, and other emerging ‘connected services’ from companies like Facebook, Google etc. I mean, come on, who doesn’t want to tweet from their TV?!

The growing demand for these capabilities along with general migration to free-to-air HD Digital Terrestrial Transmission–and the impending need to upgrade existing hardware to IPv6 — means that the Set Top Box (STB) market is doing very nicely, thank you very much. “Cutting the Chord” is increasingly possible thanks to new wave of products like the Boxee Box or Roku.

Interfacing about User Experiences, Part Five: “Mr. User Experience”

March 29th, 2011

stquote4From the fertile mind of Steve Tengler, Altia’s Director of User Experience

It is rare to see my buddy at a loss for words or, for that matter, to demonstrate one inch of defeat. But he looked as though he was scrounging. “And so you think you’re Mr. User Experience?”

“I don’t know. You’d have to ask my customers. But I’ll tell you this: if I limit my thinking or my scope to only the user interface, then I’ve assumed I cannot shoot the moon. My product, my customer, and my company would all suffer from my lack of vision. Companies like Disney, Apple, and OnStar – I can almost assure you – set out with the primary goal of creating the optimal user experience.”

Interfacing about User Experiences, Part Four: “OnStar”

… “Here are the three companies that are great examples of designing for user experience.”

The third company – and probably the best example of controlling the user experience – is OnStar.  As you know, OnStar’s main business is the delivery of Advisor-assistance after pressing their dedicated buttons inside a vehicle. You would think that might be limited to ‘Where’s the nearest gas station?’ or ‘My son YET AGAIN needs the rest stop’, but you would be wrong.

Interfacing about User Experiences, Part Three: “Apple”

March 25th, 2011

… “Here are the three companies that are great examples of designing for user experience.”

The second company to consider is Apple. They might be the weakest of the three examples only because they are unable to completely maintain ongoing control of the user experience. They provide you an iPhone – which is a unique Point of Sale experience tailored toward the quintessential ‘Apple experience.’  Once you leave the Apple store though, you’re on your own. If you decide to walk through Death Valley in the dark, so be it.

Interfacing about User Experiences, Part Two: “Disney”

From the fertile mind of Steve Tengler, Altia’s Director of User Experience

… “Here are the three companies that are great examples of designing for user experience.”

The first is Disney. I just took my family to Disneyworld in February.  For the 3,058 times my youngest had to use the restroom, I was never able to – on my own – find the nearest location despite Epcot’s colorful, detailed map. ‘Excuse me’, I waved at a man named Jeffery, who was the Disney employee cheerfully manning the Disney Vacation Packages booth nearby.  ‘Where’s the little boy’s room?’

His genuine perma-smile widened slightly to say, ‘Right around the corner – behind those palm trees. Sorry that it’s a little confusing. I get asked that all the time.’

‘OK, thanks!’ I replied. The engineer in me, however, couldn’t let that go, and so I turned to Jeffery while shepherding my son onward and inquired, ‘Why don’t they put a sign here then?’

Interfacing about User Experiences, Part One: “The Set Up”

March 23rd, 2011

stquote2From the fertile mind of Steve Tengler, Altia’s Director of User Experience

“So your title is ‘User Experience Director’, right?” He asked with a twinkle in his eye and a small smirk sneaking up in one corner –I knew this was somehow a loaded question.

“Yes,” I said with a knowing smile. “Why?”

“Well, according to Helge Fredheim’s article the other day, no one designs user experiences. They produce user interfaces – like Graphical User Interfaces or GUIs…NOT user experiences. Therefore, that either makes you a fake or an ignoramus.”

The Case for Big, Clunky Buttons

March 15th, 2011

buttons

Steve Jobs called 2011 the year of the iPad 2. We beg to differ — slightly. We see 2011 as the year of the touchscreen. There’s a wave of smaller companies who are desperately trying to build some sort of touchscreen display into their product — just to keep up. Everything from a sewing machine to a welding machine is getting some variation of a touchscreen facelift. But are there times when a product or system shouldn’t have a touchscreen UI? Most definitely yes.

Scenes from the Show (with Video)

March 8th, 2011

The team is slowly recovering from jet lag after a wildly successful trip to embedded world 2011 in Germany. Lots of new connections, prospects, and partnerships to drive more business this year. Altia’s toolset really resonates with this crowd and we plan on seeing significant results in the coming months.

As a final post about the show, we wanted to share a few pieces of media. A few pictures of our own, some from embedded world’s own photographer, and a video they put together. Markus Friedel, Altia’s Senior Application Engineer who spoke at the show, makes an appearance in their montage.
