Altia Announces HMI Development Support for Instrument Clusters on Renesas’ New RH850/D1x Series of Microcontrollers

Altia delivers affordable, yet feature rich RH850/D1x based instrument cluster experience for automotive OEMs and Tier 1s

Altia, a global leader in graphical user interface development software, has announced its first target for Renesas’ RH850/D1x Series of automotive microcontroller (MCU), which has been designed to address growing integrated automotive and ground vehicle dashboard markets.

Renesas is introducing the RH850/D1x as a highly scalable single-chip solution for the car instrumentation markets — suited for car instrument clusters, head-up displays (HUDs), and other display applications. To support these domains, the RH850/D1x provides an optimized graphics system, providing high drawing performance and allowing developers at the same time to reduce memory footprint and CPU/GPU load. The RH850/D1x MCUs incorporate a large-capacity RAM (up to 3.5MB) and Renesas’ newly developed high-functionality graphics engine supported by a highly efficient “Renesas Graphics Library”. The RH850/D1x market can span applications with typical automotive small/mid-size displays up to a resolution of 1280×480.

Altia has a strong legacy for success in the global automotive and ground vehicle markets – and its graphical user interface development software is used by OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers worldwide to get first class displays onto the lowest cost, best performing hardware. Altia’s first entry into the RH850/D1x series, the Altia DeepScreen target for Renesas RH850/D1x, makes the most of on-chip resources. Altia offers full support for all visible layers using either the 2D rendering graphics pipeline or the newly developed engine of the RH850/D1x – providing WYSIWYG layer control multi display functionality using its innovative Layer Manager. Each layer can be configured flexibly to make use of the RH850/D1x’s various features aiming to optimize memory usage and drawing performance. For more advanced designs, Altia supports static or runtime font rendering using the FreeType font engine.

Though this target has just been released, Altia and Renesas are collaborating on support for the RH850/D1x right from first sample availability. The combined Altia-Renesas solution are selected for production by Tier 1 suppliers for use in worldwide production vehicle programs. Altia is receiving strong feedback by tier 1s and car makers that this combination of technologies is an outstanding fit that has been perfectly honed for automotive instrument cluster applications.

“Altia has adapted our high quality and proven HMI development tools to Renesas’ optimized instrumentation cluster RH850/D1x series. We’re delighted to be working together on the complete Renesas RH850/D1x Series to provide our collective automotive customers all over the world with high performance and scalability for their display solutions,” states Mike Juran, Altia CEO.

What is Lean UX and How Does it Help UI/GUI Developers Reach Their Design Goals?

Lean UXLean UX is a systematic approach to UI and GUI application and software creation that assumes the following:

  • That the development team will be working with limited staff members
  • That the priority is with the outcome, not the process
  • That the process will be able to be maintained over time
  • Assumes that evaluation and hypothesis testing should precede production
  • Takes a “problem-solving” approach to the issue at hand
  • Involves a focus on user feedback and addressing customer concerns
  • Being transparent by allowing all team members involved to know and understand the process
